Jehoiada (Joiada)

Jehoiada (Joiada)
(fl. 9th cent, BCE)
High priest. After Athaliah assumed the throne and killed the royal family (II Kings 11:1), it was feared that the entire house of David would be eliminated. But Jehoiada's wife, Jehosheba, hid Joash, the baby son of King Ahaziah, in the Temple. Jehoiada later proclaimed Joash king, had Athaliah slain, and acted as regent until Joash was seven. Under Jehoiada's influence, the cult of Baal was prohibited and the Temple at Jerusalem restored (II Kings 12).
